STATISTICAL REVIEW OF WORLD ENERGY

Energy Institute

In 2023, the Energy Institute (EI) assumed responsibility for the Statistical Review of World Energy, a flagship publication previously produced annually by bp since the early 1950s.

As an energy-focused charity representing a global membership across the energy sector, the Energy Institute was ideally positioned to become the new steward of this vital resource. As the EI’s design partner, the big window’s mission in that first year was clear: preserve the integrity of the data and analysis while aligning the presentation with the EI’s identity, ensuring a smooth and visually distinct transition from bp to EI for the report’s global audience.

WHAT WE DID

  • Conceptual design
  • Representing data in a range of graphic styles
  • Typesetting
  • Proofreading
  • Retouching
  • Social media assets

A PLATFORM FOR LEADERSHIP AND INNOVATION

Taking over the Statistical Review of World Energy (SROWE) also presented an opportunity to raise the EI’s profile as a thought leader and knowledge hub within the global energy community. From the outset, we introduced new design and content elements to improve accessibility, clarity, and engagement with the data and, year-onyear, we’ve added new elements to help achieve that goal.

YEAR ONE

Introduced Sankey diagrams to visually illustrate trade flows of oil, natural gas, and coal from exporting to importing countries.

YEAR TWO

Added chapter pages, using striking photography as visual context for each energy type, combined with introductory commentary and sector-specific graphs.

YEAR THREE

Retained and refined previous innovations, ensuring consistency while enhancing the value of the document.

Launched a concise summary edition of the full review, featuring key highlights and showcasing contributors and partners, to create an accessible snapshot for stakeholders who may be short on time.

GROWING GLOBAL REACH

Since the EI took over the Review, its reach has expanded significantly, particularly internationally. In collaboration with KPMG China, the big window supported the development of a Chinese-language version, further extending the report’s accessibility to one of the world’s largest energy markets.

The 2025 edition of the SROWE has already seen over 10,000 digital downloads, with the launch event viewed by thousands worldwide, both online and in-person by energy sector experts.

A COLLABORATIVE SUCCESS

Working closely with the team at the Energy Institute and its partners - Kearney, KPMG, and Heriot-Watt University - has been a rewarding and collaborative experience for the big window team. We’re proud of the role we’ve played and look forward to continuing our partnership to bring further innovations in the years to come.

THE VIEW OF THE ENERGY INSTITUTE

‘Now in our third year collaborating on the Energy Institute Statistical Review of World Energy, The Big Window remains a trusted and valued partner, bringing together creativity, precision and a clear understanding of our goals,’ says Gemma Regniez FRSA, External Affairs Director of the Energy Institute. ‘Their skill in transforming a highly technical report into a visually engaging and accessible resource brings the data to life for audiences worldwide, while preserving the accuracy and clarity our users depend on.’

‘This year, working closely with our team, they also developed our first concise summary document – a highly valuable addition that has helped us convey the key findings of the 2025 report to users and stakeholders with insight and impact.’

LOOKING AHEAD

The 2026 edition will be our fourth collaboration with the Energy Institute and will mark a significant milestone: the 75th anniversary of this globally respected document, long established as a key reference for professionals and policymakers in the energy sector. We’re excited for what’s next as we approach this landmark edition.
